The only year in recent memory that the ground hasn’t been littered with all these Pine Cone “Cobs” was the one we had the Red Crossbills here. The squirrels have to rip the cones apart to get to the nuts.

Cute. Really cute. Except when he’s really this close to the house – I noticed a baby fox squirrel down below the house, so probably trying to provide for the growing one.

A bear’s claw marks. A partially excavated bird hole. At the same time? Probably not, but then again this pairing does bring an image and a small wildlife story to mind.

Not a chipmunk, but rather a Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel – it doesn’t have striped on its head.

Whistle Pig – Rock Chuck – Yellow Bellied Marmot
Yellow Bellied Marmot – Image 090611J4233

Since I’ve been later in the day on getting photos up, I figured it’s time for a Whistle Pig – Rock Chuck – or Yellow Bellied Marmot. The western cousin of the Groundhog. Taking this photo on a short hike my husband and I took along an established trail in the Upper Geyser Basin, I completely focused on the one on top of the rock. Not until I started to process the photos did I notice the baby peeking its nose out of the den. There are many marmots around in Yellowstone, but you often hear their high-pitched call long before you actually spot them. I’ve often seen them around the Grand Geyser area – something to watch for while waiting for Grand to erupt. In 2005, we saw small baby ones next to the trail at Artist’s Paint Pots. Just scan the rocks in the area when you hear the sound of a whistle pig – once you know the sound, you won’t mistake it for anything else.

A friend of ours had some foxes who were well habituated with humans living in the area. Right or wrong, it was the way these foxes lived, and since he didn’t have any dogs, they would often visit. While over at his house during the holiday season, this pretty female came up and watched us through the glass door. With the camera in hand, I held it down lower on her level while I stood – kneeling down would have spooked her – and I released the shutter, bouncing the flash off of the ceiling and hoping it wouldn’t cause too many reflections in the glass. It worked.

We have all varieties of Dark Eyed Juncos here – this one, the gray headed, being the most commonly seen. I love days like this where it’s snowing, then the sun pokes out, then the next wave of snow comes in. The fire is crackling in the wood stove and I’m happily working on some project – on this day, I had the tripod set up by the window and just waited for one to be in the right position next to the bird feeder.

Steelhead Trout

We heard about the Steelhead Trout that were thick in a stream used for spawning that feeds into Lake Erie. Because some homeowners upstream didn’t want fishermen asking if they could fish on their property, a barrier was installed to prevent the fish from using that stream to spawn – or at least that’s the story we heard from the locals. This gave us the opportunity to witness hundreds of Steelhead Trout bottle-necked. This is one of more photos to come.
