West Thumb Tree Swallow

Just downhill from Abyss Pool, on the same side of the boardwalk as Abyss is a tree stump that forks and is covered with lichen (moss?). Last year, the Mountain Bluebirds nested in the left hand side and tree swallows in the one on the right. Keep an eye out for any dead trees with holes in them. Walking the boardwalks around the thermal features usually gives you a chance to really watch these animated birds.

Two cones had built up significantly already by the first part of June at the Thumb Paint Pots. Another is building in the background and a couple more in other spots. And the pool of thermal water actually looks a smidgen hotter than when I saw it last fall. It will be interesting to see how things progress as the summer wears on.

The other day I posted a photo of the edge of Black Pool. This one was taken after walking over to about the middle of this large and amazing hot spring at West Thumb.

Black Pool is one of the gorgeous hot springs at West Thumb. This IS the color of this spring – brilliant all on its own. Many photographers work at the lovely natural compliments of orange and turquoise, which I do as well. It’s hard or maybe even impossible to capture the wonder of standing on the edge of this deep and lovely pool.

It looks like nothing but an empty hole and most people ignore it and walk on. Percolating Spring is empty, but earlier it had a bit more water, but not much – enough water in it to really wonder if that wasn’t the level it was at when named – because the constant bubbles seen when full were now sounding exactly like a percolating coffee pot. Empty now, it likely will refill at some point when a shift of energy takes place.

This batch of trees has slowly been dying from an increase in the thermal energy in this area at West Thumb Geyser Basin for a few years now. The heated soil is just too high for them to survive. The shadows they cast on the steam just made the sunrise magical.

Whenever I visit West Thumb early in the summer, I invariably hear comments filled with disappointment that Fishing Cone still sat under water. But it’s still pretty – especially at sunset. I had quickly processed this image before just for personal use and finally realized I didn’t have it processed for stock yet. So, here it is.

Of all the photos I’ve taken of Ledge spring over the years, I think this is when it’s at its prettiest – hot, clear and overflowing, but all the other changes I find fascinating as well.

I think I’ve tried to take a decent photo of these dead trees for years, but on this day, with the fog from the lake enveloping them, it had the moodiness that makes it work.
