Blue Star Spring 4 June 2008

Finding photo gems hidden among past travels to Yellowstone is almost as good as heading there again.

Almost.

I’m itching to get back there.

Lots of photos of this eruption (as always with Grand) – this one is of one of the first large bursts at 11:58 AM – just having reached it’s greatest height, the top of the water column is just beginning to fall back.

I may have to get a print of this one on metallic paper just to see how it comes out. I really like how the backlighting from the late afternoon sun emphasized the steam.

If you walk by Beehive Geyser and see it like this – do not walk on. Stay. Encourage others to stay. The fact it’s called Beehive’s Indicator vent means it’s announcing the very good chance that you’ll get to see a geyser that’s taller than Old Faithful, erupts longer and you’ll stand closer to it than you can to Old Faithful. Wait. Really.

Unless – remember, geysers reserve the right to do what they want – you hear that there have been some false indicators seen. That means sometimes the indicator vent erupts, but Beehive doesn’t. Then give it a good 20 minutes at least.

So often Vent Geyser is ignored as it usually erupts at the same time as its bigger neighbor, Grand Geyser.

About every half hour, doublet pool thumps. The steam bubbles down below collapse from the weight of the water – and create waves and thumps you can feel while on the boardwalk.
