I keep revisiting this set of photos from Sylvan Lake, thinking I should have stayed longer and just waited to see how the light shifted and changed, but Yellowstone is large and other destinations kept calling to my heart and the clock kept rolling on. I find myself returning to the photos to return to that moment – to seek out details I missed while there. And, in a way, to call back the memory in richer detail – the chill in the air, the silence between passing cars and the sound of the hooves on the pavement as a bull bison walked right toward the car, giving me a reason to get in and wait to see what he chose to do – stand near the car and keep his eye on me. So, it was a reason to move on and let him continue enjoying the morning at Sylvan Lake. Some artists say they ‘seal’ the memory through the time it takes to sketch or draw, or paint. For me, it just takes a click.

Driving into the Park this June morning, the snow still clinging to the banks, the calm waters of Sylvan Lake invited me to stop and capture the perfect reflection of Top Notch Peak.

The colors of the undergrowth in the lodgepole pine forests just cried out to take center stage in a photo. I had to oblige.
