Watching the Dance

The other evening

I paused for a moment to watch the snow showers

waltzing with the wind across the mountains.

Drama in Hartsel

We had a full week of sunshine and gorgeous weather in Yellowstone. Hardly a cloud to be seen. That changed when we drove home – the farther south into Colorado we drove, the clouds were full of drama as though reminding us how much we missed them. Just love those dramatic clouds over western landscapes. Here’s a large one we watched all the way through South Park – in this photo (one of many) it sits over the hot springs at Hartsel. They closed long ago due to the high radioactivity there.

Oxbow Bend

This photo pretty much sums up the type of weather we had the entire time we were in the Yellowstone area – amazing.

Ever since living in this area, I love watching the repetitions of the seasons – haying season included. That’s the old railroad bed just beyond the area cut for hay, and the local historical society has a photo of a train showing there, taken in this spot. Amazing how little details you learn become a part of an everyday scene.

I got up early this summer morning to see how the sunrise developed over Yellowstone Lake – I took those, but as I started on my way to Old Faithful, this view at Duck Lake caught my breath and I had to stop. It was brilliant orange – I vaguely recall there was a fire somewhere that helped create this amazing shot.

We were on our way home, the back way through the mountains to avoid the front range of Colorado. It had been a long drive from Yellowstone, and as we watched the sun setting, it grew more and more spectacular. We needed to stop to walk the dogs, so pulled off at this junction. I only had time for one or two shots as we really were tired and wanted to get home. This one worked. Identifiable from anywhere in the area, these are the ‘Rabbit Ears’ that give the pass its name.

During the winter, this is often the view I watch as I sip coffee in the morning. Eventually we hope to install an upgraded webcam that will let you better see this view as soon as the business (or we) can afford it. This image is two photos stitched together.

Land Beyond the Mist

Where the Road Ends at Garo (the old train stop for the Denver South Park and Pacific) - or at least it seems to. (Janet White - SnowMoon LLC)

Driving across South Park, the patchy fog began to lift here and there. As we approached Garo, an old train station not far from Fairply, I could see the photo and asked my husband to make a quick stop there. After a quick survey through the viewfinder, I decided to do a panoramic shot. I love how the road looks as though it disappears into the mist and may (or may not) reach the land beyond. Taken one year ago, today.
