In the summer, I often will check the bugs that decided to camp for the night near the lights. This one I only saw this one time. I keep coming back to this photo – it’s not quite up yet for stock simply because I cannot find what it is. If you know – I would great appreciate an email.

I pulled off in a popular fishing pullout not far from Old Faithful along the Firehole River and in my wandering -  not far from the road – I found this guy and 3 or 4 others all munching happily away. I wrote a more in-depth field journal entry on this that I’ll dig out, dust off and add to my Field Journaling blog in the near future.

While gathering firewood, we came across this amazing work of architecture – created by carpenter ants. Just an amazing system of levels and tunnels. We still have this here and I need to do some more photos of this piece of nature-made artwork.

2009 created the perfect ladybug storm – they thrived like mad that year up here. This is but one of hundreds easily found in the area that summer. I could reliably find them on the sage weed, searching for aphids which also thrived that year.

Brown winters, or ones with little snow are harder for me than deep white ones and I find myself already thinking about the garden.

Every few days in the summer, I walk around our house just to note the changes and seeing what presents itself as a subject for the camera. On this July day, I found quite a little eco-system among some of the weeds. In particular, this lacewing caught my eye and I could tell it was hunting aphids, but how many there were on this little stem remained hidden until I processed the photo. While I knew they were good bugs for the garden, I hadn’t really seen them in action like this before.
