An Artist’s Touch

Her color palette consists of daisies, petunias and cascading lobelia and other works of nature guided by human hands. The flowers grow at a high altitude, maybe closer to the sun gives them their vibrancy. Bring those flowers down in altitude and they explode with growth. She is an artist and I happily plunk down good money to have one or more of her creations grace my house during the summer months – as do so many of the businesses over the hill in Breckenridge.  Quality is worth the money. The greenhouse in Alma – can’t wait to see what magic she creates this year.

Imperfect Beauty

Transitions. Growth. Change. No matter what change you make or experience in life, it creates imperfections. It’s hard to let go of ‘yesterday’ when all was gloriously perfect in our minds. But we must let it go and let the transition happen in order to become what God intended for us. Like this apple blossom, though, the imperfections and bruises create their own sort of beauty as it transitions to becoming an apple. The ability to appreciate that beauty in yourself and others is nothing short of Grace.

Party Hat

Put on your party hat! Well, at least that’s what these flowering chives remind me of – a party in the garden…

HDR – High Dynamic Range Photography

Time to change up this blog a bit to include not only the completed P365, but also my current work as I move beyond that project.

In the past few weeks, I’ve taken more of an interest in HDR – High Dynamic Range. Basically, it’s taking multiple exposures of the same scene and merging them so it captures more of the details your eye can see – more details in the shadows and highlights than what you can capture in a single image. I prefer more of a natural look to my photos rather than the heavy halos so often associated with HDR photography. Here are some of my first attempts:

The Monkey Flowers this year are amazing. They love to grow near the steam and hot water – here, on top of Inkwell Spring. Hard to believe such a delightful flower thrives in such a hostile environment.

My mother grows flowering chives in her garden each year – this year I just had to work on getting a few good macro shots of them just emerging.

They’re still working to open Dunraven Pass this year, but with ALL that snow, this late July/early August should prove to give another dazzling explosion of color. I can hardly wait.

Mouse-eared Chickweed was one of the first ‘non-gardeny’ flowers I learned to recognize as a kid up at our cabin. I fell in love with the tiny notch in each petal and the delicate opaque gray lines along them. It still brings a smile to my face when I find it out wandering.

I found these flowers awhile back and identified them, but cannot find them again. All I recall is the nickname or common name of Fairy Torches. I’ll find them again, but had to play around with the photo to give a second look to it. This is one of those photos that would work GREAT with a quote or greeting card sentiment on it. Here’s the ‘played with’ version, though I’m still looking for the right texture for this one:

Hiding in the Toadflax

Common Toadflax, Butter and Eggs, Linaria vulgaris. However you know it, patches of this snapdragony ‘weed’ make delightful additions to meadows and bare areas. It is somewhat aggressive up at this altitude, but not so much that it takes over an area – just adds a splash of sunshine. Processing this photo, I saw the one insect toward the top, but then I noticed the other one hiding.
