Digging back in the files for this one. Bison often hang around the warmth of the thermal features, giving visitors to Yellowstone an opportunity to encounter wildlife up close.

June snowstorms aren’t terribly rare in Yellowstone most years. Taken June 10 in 2008, I watched a couple of bison make their way down the along the incredibly swollen Madison river during a heavy flurry that moved through. They really looked rather miserable, and the lead bison went to the edge of the crossing and stopped and just stood there for quite awhile.

Bison Management in Yellowstone involves moving the herd(s) away from the Montana border and up closer to Old Faithful. If you are in the line of traffic following them at ‘bison pace’ it can add an hour extra to your drive as there’s no other path for them to take.
