This area near the river at Biscuit Basin has heated up in the past few years, causing some changes in the thermal features. The steam in the background is from a new, nearly perpetual spouter that broke out in 2006. Somewhere in my files, I have photos of Black Opal Pool with geese swimming on it in the winter – back in 2002 before I got serious about my photography. I imagine it’s too hot today for that to happen without disaster to the birds. Below are a couple more photos, one showing the thermal kill of the lodgepole pines growing near neighboring Wall Pool (or perhaps Black Diamond) indicating that the soil is now too hot for the trees to continue their growth any further.

Jewel Geyser erupts every 8 minutes or so and has a few bursts – making it a reliable one to see (unless it decides to change).
