Walking around, I noticed a robin going to a tree regularly with food – and on closer inspection found the reason. A fledgling who didn’t even really notice me – it seemed it was concentrating on just staying on the branch.

I had been quietly standing on the bank with the tripod, photographing this pelican who completely ignored me and others on the bank until some kids came racing through yelling and screaming. The parents arrived shortly after and got the kids quieted down, but the screaming drew the attention of the pelican who looked over quizically and watched the kids for a short while before determining them to not be a threat and went back to watching the river for dinner.

It was snowing lightly and the heron slowly worked his way up and down in front of our motorhome, looking for a meal. Eventually, down a bit farther, he found a snack.

Red Crossbill in a Ponderosa Pine Tree

In 2006 we had a bumper crop of pine cones. The pollen that year was awful. But the result gave us the gift of watching a small flock of Red Crossbills through most of the following spring. They nested in a fir tree near the shop and no matter how hard I looked, I never did find the nest. They successfully fledged a good half dozen babies – and it was a delight to sit here at my desk and watch them. The youngsters watched the adults expertly get seeds out of the cones. Then when they tried, the seeds would invariably drop, with them watching it fall each time. Eventually they would give up and beg – and an adult would eventually give in. We haven’t ever seen so many before or since. It completely depends on the pine cone crop the year before.

One Day to Launch
One Day to Launch – Image 090705J8749

I had watched the parents clean out the entire bird box and re-line it with a moss base and other nest material on top of that. Then watched them as they quietly sat on the eggs and finally, the babies started to peek out to see the world outside the box. This photo was taken one day before they flew. They hung around for quite a bit after this, but it wasn’t long before the White Breasted Nuthatches cleaned out that nest, re-lined it with bits of bark, and the cycle went another circle.

We watched this osprey fishing in the afternoon as storm clouds began to build, but with no success, it flew to check out other coves at Hebgen Lake and as it went, the backdrop of the dramatic clouds provided an interesting shot.

Eagle Nest in the Fog
Eagle Nest in the Fog – Image 080531J7119
- Date Created: 31 May 2008
- Location: West Entrance road in Yellowstone

As you enter Yellowstone through the west entrance, you pass by a section of road that’s blocked for stopping, standing, etc. This nest is the reason. It’s a bald eagle nest that many photographers and eagle enthusiasts and regular visitors enjoy. While bald eagles can be seen in many areas of the Park, this one draws a lot of attention. On the morning of this photo, the fog had begun to lift, giving all the layers between where I stood at the edge of the ‘no stopping’ area and the nest. On a day like this, with the eagle on the nest obviously asleep and not moving much, I was alone to capture this photo.
