Growing up as a child of the west, ferns don’t grow wild. In fact, they take a tremendous amount of care and nurturing to keep them alive, let alone looking healthy. I honestly think of them only as house plants. Yet while I know perfectly well that they grow wild in many areas, I still find that fact absolutely amazing.

Oooh – processing this image made me itch. Yet one more reason I love living in the West – no poison ivy. While I’ve not had the unpleasant experience of itching from it, I’ve known those who have and that’s enough for me. The details in this photo (and others waiting to be processed) show the hairs starting to grow out of the vine which are another identifying feature.

I’m sure there are more, but here are some from research for keywords:

  • Leaves of three, let it be.
  • Hairy vine, no friend of mine.
  • Raggy Rope – don’t be a dope.
  • Longer middle stem – stay away from them.

The last light of day in Pennsylvania is so much softer and at such a lower angle than here at home – and it completely enchanted me with how it illuminated the texture of everything including the leaves.

Where we stayed, there was a small pond full of frogs, lily pads and leaves submerged and yet floating below the surface that fell from a nearby tree. Fallen leaves that never completely landed.

Perfect weather in Pennsylvania calls people to be outside as much as possible. Walking through the woods, you could almost feel the trees and the sunshine pulling the stress from you and inviting you to just relax into the nature surrounding you.
